8th Annual Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer

Karene O’Hare

On September 10, 2016, the Hare and Tortoise 8K hosted 272 runners for its 8th Annual Run/Walk for Ovarian Cancer. This race supports the Karene O’Hare Memorial Fund for Ovarian Cancer at the Williamsburg Community Foundation. Local resident John O’Hare created the fund in honor of his wife, Karene, who died of ovarian cancer in 2007. The run raises money to fund Ovarian Cancer screening programs for under-insured and un-insured women, of all ages, who reside in the greater Williamsburg community. To date $129,000 has been donated to underwrite these programs which are offered by the Lackey  Clinic and the Olde Towne Medical and Dental Center. Ovarian Cancer is the deadliest gynecologic cancer and is the 5th leading cause of cancer deaths among American women.
