Grants Awarded from Unrestricted and Field-of-Interest Funds since 1999 A B C D E F G H I J K L M N O P Q R S T U V W X Y Z A grant was awarded for maintenance of the Adams Garden, located at the corner of Richmond Road and North Boundary Street. All Together, Inc., a 501(c)(3) public charity formed in 1995, operates a range of programs that bring people of diverse racial, social, religious and economic backgrounds together in multiple settings. With the Foundation’s support a personal computer and printer were purchased. The Family Connections Program, an early intervention initiative, reduces health and stress-related problems for caregivers, assists families in making difficult financial and legal decisions to meet care-giving needs and provides advocacy service for the individual with dementia by reducing possible incidents of physical abuse and neglect as well as premature placement into long-term facilities. Funding was received to purchase a computer and laser printer, pay a licensing fee for the use of software and install a dedicated phone line to access the software. These purchases assist clients in applying for a prescription drug program. 2008 - Grant used exclusively to provide uninsured and underinsured patients at Angels of Mercy Medical Clinic, with a guarantee of paid-for prescription medications when not available elsewhere. (Grant from Business Partners Make a Difference Fund) The Foundation provided grants to help underwrite a concert and to teach adults with mental retardation to better manage their own finances. Avalon: A Center for Women and Children The grant provided assistance for supportive counseling services that were made available to elementary school children who manifest problems with anger, bullying and lack of respect. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Williamsburg (BBBS) -- to help support the expansion of the High School “Bigs” Program. Center for Child & Family Services Williamsburg Funds were used to were used to support the STAR program which teaches students more appropriate coping skills, helping them to reduce their feelings of depression and isolation so they can reach their personal and academic goals. The grant replaces physical therapy equiptment, lost in the October 2007 flood, used for infants and toddlers with delayed or compromised motor skills. Clara Byrd Baker Elementary School—Girls on the Run Program- is a self-esteem enhancing program for girls 8 – 13 years old that combines training for a 5K running event with workouts to encourage positive emotional, social, mental and physical development. Colonial Community Services Board People’s Place-- to help support the re-integration of adult Williamsburg area residents with serious mental illness by providing opportunities to socialize, access community facilities, and establish and run a small in-house business. Community Alliance for the Performing Arts Fund The grant supported CAPA’s 2003-2004 theater productions of “The Nutcracker” and “Wizard of Oz.” Community Leadership Services (Williamsburg Area Chamber of Commerce Foundation) to establish a leadership training program for older members of the community. Community Services Coalition, Inc. 2008 - Grant to assist with improvements to the building which houses United Way of Greater Williamsburg, Williamsburg Symphonia, FISH and other organizations. Specifically it will fund an air handler, air conditioner and plan for building renovations. (Grant from Business Partners Make a Difference Fund) This grant was used to provide “staff” t-shirts to the volunteers to show appreciation for their hard work and commitment. 2008 - Grant to support the purchase of a draft horse to accommodate larger children with special needs so they can receive therapeutic riding lessons. Early Childhood Music School of Williamsburg United Methodist Church Project Outreach will expand to include all 8 Head Start classes in WJCC. Combined with the currently served CDR, Head Start and Bright Beginnings programs, Project Outreach will serve most at-risk pre-school students in the community. Eastern Virginia Brass Society, Inc. The grant to Eastern Virginia Brass supports the commissioning and premiere a work for brass quintet and narrator celebrating Virginia 2007. The funds were used to partially offset costs of volunteer training and background checks as well as for ID badges the volunteers wear when they present themselves to new care recipients. back to top Flute Frenzy Association The grant was used to help commission an original piece of music for a flute choir to celebrate the 400th anniversary of the landing at Jamestown. The commissioned piece of music will be world-premiered by Flute Frenzy performers at an appropriate venue within the Williamsburg area in 2006/2007. Girl Scout Council of the Colonial Coast The grant supported Girl Scouting in the following communities: Lafayette, Mount Gilead, Powhatan Apartments, Avalon Women's Center, Shiloh Baptist Church Grove Christian Outreach Center A grant supported the Food Plus Access Program. 2007--funding was used to support the Emergency Financial Assistance Program. Support enabled the purchase of subscriptions to Kind News at $25 each for 85 public school classrooms in grades K though 6. The Society considers Kind News, which is designed to provide humane education to schoolchildren, an investment in our community’s future. 2006-- to help purchase medical equipment for a Spay / Neuter Clinic. Historic Triangle Funders Forum The partners of the Historic Triangle Funders Forum (HTFF), created a comprehensive report of the assets and needs of the Greater Williamsburg community.. Historic Triangle Senior Center This grant was used to expand the Medical Escort Service, which provides transportation to medical appointments for senior citizens. 2007--funding was awarded for a new handicapped accessible vehicle. Historic Triangle Substance Abuse Coalition The grant was used to reprint two resource brochures: Parenting Information and HTSAC. Funding also supported printing a new brochure featuring training opportunities in the community. Hospice Support Care of Williamsburg The initiative expanded bereavement support to include an assessment and identification of those at high risk, early intervention with counseling and referrals will be provided through the critical first three months. The grant provided safety equiptment for volunteers and employees Jamestown 4-H Educational Center 2008 - Grant to help expand the environmental education offerings to provide learning opportunities for local school children. James City County Police Department The grant supported upgrading the simple first aid kits supplied to each officer to a Dyna Med 3-in-1 Deluxe First Aid Kits. 2008 - Grant to help purchase CPR mannequins and related educational supplies to enhance the Department’s CPR training program. This grant was used to fund an After-School Latchkey Program at the school for “at risk” latchkey children. The program provides snacks/drinks, homework assistance, games, arts and crafts projects, and special programs/speakers to keep them entertained until 5 p.m. when free transportation is provided to bring the children home. The grant will help underwrite the cost of transporting and housing members of the award-winning JHS Choir to Washington, D.C., where they have been invited to perform with the National Philharmonic during a regular season concert. The Jamestown-Yorktown Foundation has involved both the United Kingdom and the United States in a proposal for joint issuance of commemorative postage stamps to honor Jamestown 2007. All 1,200,000 of Virginia’s public and private school students will have an opportunity to design postal cachets with the possibility that several designs may be used on Jamestown 2007 stamps. John D. Rockefeller Jr. Library at Colonial Williamsburg to provided travel expenses to a visiting researcher researching a first book or article on Virginia history. $350 will be awarded each year for three years. (From the Parke S. Rouse Jr. Memorial Fund) 2008 -Grant to cover the costs of 200 patient education packages for Diabetes. The grant was used for distribution of the publication Facts for Voters, which identifies the offices and boards and describes their roles within Williamsburg, James City County and York County. supported transportation costs to bring thirteen Williamsburg region K-12 classes to art exhibitions at the Muscarelle Museum of Art during the 2006-2007 academic year. NAACP Branch York-James City-Williamsburg Supported the publication of a minority business directory for consumers, citizens and businesses in the Historic Triangle community. Peninsula Agency on Aging, Inc. This grant provided in-home assistance for elderly residents living within greater Williamsburg through the Personal Care program. Personal care provided by PAA bridges the gap for seniors who are either financially or functionally ineligible for Medicaid and for those who cannot afford private in-home services. The program provides a cost effective and dignified solution for senior citizens and their families. 2008 - Grant to help provide a minimum of 10 impoverished seniors in greater Williamsburg with up to $100 each for cooling assistance this summer. Project Outreach at Williamsburg United Methodist Church Project Outreachconsists of weekly classes in music and movement offered at First Steps, a program of Child Development Resources, and at two different Head Start program locations. Rita Welsh Adult Literacy Program A grant was used to recruit and train more volunteers for the Rita Welsh Adult Skills Program so that all adult learners received at least 40 hours of English instruction during the 2003-2004 program year. 2006-A grant from the Business Partners Make a Difference Fund supported a computer assisted learning lab for program participants. Rockefeller Library at Colonial Williamsburg Funding was provided for three years to support travel expenses for fellows traveling to Williamsburg to conduct research at the library. (Rouse Fund) Funds were used to restock food pantry shelves depleted after Hurricane Isabel and to replace its freezer. Salvation Army The Red Shield Youth Program is targeted at high-risk, low income youth who are ordinarily not involved with structured programming. The program provides them with the opportunity to experience the rich cultural resources of the greater Williamsburg region. Senior Services Coalition RIDES Program Support for RIDES – A Coordinated Transportation System. Senior Services Coalition initiative, a Historic Triangle Senior Center program. Provides non-emergency medical transportation to seniors and the disabled in the greater Williamsburg area. Temple Beth El of Williamsburg Grant provided funding for the 7th annual Virginia Peninsula Jewish Film Festival The Lazarus House An early recipient of Foundation assistance, The Lazarus House received funds to help with the purchase of its first computer system. To purchase hardware and software needed for gallery operations, presentations, and educational outreach programs Funds will support the creation of an emergency homeless shelter. The three-day arts festival (in 2003) comprised a wide variety of artistic performances and events. In honor of Jamestown 2007, the VSO will commission a fanfare for both orchestra and concert band that will be debuted by the VSO and by Jamestown High School, respectively; then be played by young musicians throughout the region. Participants in WAN HIV education and testing programs at Colonial Services Board will reduce engagement in behaviors that put them at risk for HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections. Williamsburg Area Alliance for the Mentally Ill The grant funded the “In Our Own Voice: Living with Mental Illness” program in 2004. The goals of this education program are to dispel myths and overcome the stigma associated with mental illness. It consists of a 12-minute video that takes the audience into the lives and thoughts of consumers who talk about their experiences with issues critical to dealing with mental illness and is followed by a short presentation by a local person who has had personal experience with the above issues. The floor is then open to discussion, and audience participation is encouraged. Williamsburg Area Learning Tree (WALT) The grant funded a faster, computer, printer, and better phone equipment to provide more effective service to registrants. Williamsburg Area Meals-on-Wheels The grant will enable MOW to provide 284 hot, nutritious noon-day meals to those unable to prepare meals for financial, emotional, or physical reasons. The grant to Williamsburg Botanical Garden supports implementation of the Community Demonstration Garden in Freedom Park. This project represents the first of many landscape enhancement initiatives designed to benefit and educate citizens of greater Williamsburg. James Hosay was commissioned to compose a march, “America Alive,” and a symphonic piece, “Williamsburg Consort.” In the fall of 2004 he attended the premier of his works at the America Alive III Concert and conducted a workshop at the College of William and Mary and Bruton High School. The Consort will use these works as signature pieces each year. This grant helped fund the operation of a weekly Williamsburg Farmers’ Market in Merchants Square for Eastern Virginia growers and producers selling fresh seasonal food and farm products directly to residents and visitors of the Greater Williamsburg area. Williamsburg Music Club (2001, 2005 & 2008) The club received funding for its program of grants-in-aid to promising young musicians in Williamsburg, James City and upper York Counties, and surrounding areas to further their musical education and expand their musical horizons through competition and public performance. Williamsburg Players ~ Readers Theater The Readers Theater presents dramatic readings of new plays that focuses on the written text using minimal set construction, lighting, and costumes.. Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation The grant funded the library’s existing Gab Bag program, which benefits people of all socioeconomic backgrounds and allows them to participate in library-sponsored book groups. Each Gab Bag is a collection of 8-20 copies of a title, available to promote group discussion. The program involved underserved area elementary school students in soccer. It uses the sport, mentoring, and educational activities to promote exercise and general health, prevent obesity and unhealthy lifestyles, and encourage interest in academics. Williamsburg Symphonia Orchestra The “Music is for Everyone Project” utilized music as a vehicle to: involve youth in positive, safe, self-esteem building programsand expand access to cultural enrichment activities for underserved youth. 2005-- to support its Young People’s concerts provided yearly to over 2,000 Williamsburg / James City / York county children. The grant enabled WYO to add a chamber music program to its other offerings. 2005--to help support the WYO’s four different performing groups and summer camp. 2008 - Grant for additional music teachers to teach in smaller groups during the Summer Music Festival which is a one-week long music camp for orchestral and chamber music for all levels. 2008 - This grant establishes an annual Sing Fest to gather prospective members, conduct broad outreach and provide opportunity for singing fun. Williamsburg Youth Harp Society Funding was provided for a harp therapy program in cooperation with the Sentara Regional Medical Center.
