AREA RESTAURANTS AND WINE SHOPS PITCH IN FOR CHARITY
Corks for a Cause raises money to help people in our community through local nonprofit organizations.

Aberdeen Barn owner, Dennis White, displays corks collected over the years that will be used in the Corks for a Cause program

Corks for a Cause, a new signature event of the Williamsburg Community Foundation, will help local non-profits help people in our community this fall.  Corks will bring together over 20 leading wine shops and restaurants in the area for a month long event.  The event will run August 28, 2010 to October 4, 2010.

Corks for a Cause provides a new way for our restaurant family to support the Williamsburg Community Foundation.  We think this will be a fun event for our restaurant customers to wind up the summer, says Tom Austin, Berret’s Restaurant.

Each participating business will have a container filled with Corks.  Patrons will donate $2 and will guess how many corks are in the container.  The person with the closest guess will win a $100 gift certificate to that venue.  There is no limit to how many times or locations that one individual may enter.  Friends and supporters are urged to visit several locations and guess several times.  The more guesses, the more we can do to help the people in the community.

We have supported countless groups in greater Williamsburg over the years, but Corks for a Cause gives us the opportunity to support the larger community with one great event, the event is about people having fun and helping their neighbors.  We hope everyone will support the event -- Mary Ellen Power, owner of the Fat Canary and The Cheese Shop of Virginia.

The costs of this event have been generously underwritten so all proceeds will directly benefit nonprofit organizations that support local residents.  In November local nonprofit organizations will be eligible to apply for these funds through the WCF’s competitive grant round.  The Foundation’s normal grant guidelines apply.

Civic participation has been very important to me over the years, I am pleased to see so many of our local businesses working together to support the community with this event, Visit one of the locations….and take a guess.  It is for an excellent cause and you just may win -- Mickey Chohany, Second Street, an American Bistro.

The Williamsburg Community Foundation connects people who care with causes that matter in our community..forever. The Foundation is a collection of gifts given by local donors. The gifts are invested. Each year earnings are returned to the community in the form of grants. These funds grow with each new gift and produce income that will continue to meet local needs for generations to come.  For more information about the WCF and its support of the community, call 757-259-1660 or email ncsullivan@williamsburgcommunityfoundation.org.
