Corks for a Cause Raises $17,000
Aberdeen Barn owner, Dennis White, displays corks collected over the years that were used in the Corks for a Cause program

Our Corks for a Cause campaign was a huge success, generating $17,000 in proceeds. The idea was conceived by WCF donors, Judy and Harry Wason. Their goal was twofold—to raise additional funds so that we could increase the number of grants awarded this winter, and to create an event that would be fun for the community while also raising public awareness for what the WCF does.
For six weeks, 25 local restaurants and wine displayed containers of corks and for a $2 fee, customers were invited to guess how many corks were in each container. A $100 gift certificate was awarded to the participant who made the closest guess.
Now that the event is over, we’d love to be able to use those corks to bottle Judy and Harry’s enthusiasm! Not only did they conceive the idea, but provided a matching grant of $5000 to cover
all expenses. The gift was matched by Hope and Bobby Beck and Carolyn and Michael McNamara. Judy and Harry also worked tirelessly with other dedicated volunteers to collect corks, containers, and work with the restaurants and wine shops. The event netted an $8,000 profit which will help non-profit organizations struggling to meet the community’s growing needs. Unquestionably, there are also many residents who are now more aware of the Williamsburg Community Foundation’s mission.
